Transport of spin and mass at normal-superfluid interfaces in the unitary Fermi gas

چکیده

Transport in strongly interacting Fermi gases provides a window into the nonequilibrium behavior of correlated fermions. In particular, interface between polarized normal gas and weakly superfluid at finite temperature presents model for understanding transport normal-superfluid normal-superconductor interfaces. An excess polarization phase or deficit brings system out equilibrium, leading to currents across interface. We implement phenomenological mean-field unitary gas, investigate spin mass under conditions. consider independently prepared regions brought contact, calculate instantaneous (NS) For an unpolarized superfluid, we find that current is suppressed below threshold value driving chemical potential differences, while nearly vanishes critically superfluid. The can exhibit cases where Andreev reflection vanishes, general prevents occurrence current. Our results provide guidance future experiments aiming characterize NS

Quantized superfluid vortex rings in the unitary Fermi gas.

In a recent article, Yefsah et al. [Nature (London) 499, 426 (2013)] report the observation of an unusual excitation in an elongated harmonically trapped unitary Fermi gas. After phase imprinting a domain wall, they observe oscillations almost an order of magnitude slower than predicted by any theory of domain walls which they interpret as a "heavy soliton" of inertial mass some 200 times large...

Spin transport in polaronic and superfluid Fermi gases

We present measurements of spin transport in ultracold gases of fermionic 6Li in a mixture of two spin states at a Feshbach resonance. In particular, we study the spin-dipole mode, where the two spin components are displaced from each other against a harmonic restoring force. We prepare a highly imbalanced, or polaronic, spin mixture with a spin-dipole excitation and we observe strong, unitarit...

Revealing the superfluid lambda transition in the universal thermodynamics of a unitary Fermi gas.

Fermi gases, collections of fermions such as neutrons and electrons, are found throughout nature, from solids to neutron stars. Interacting Fermi gases can form a superfluid or, for charged fermions, a superconductor. We have observed the superfluid phase transition in a strongly interacting Fermi gas by high-precision measurements of the local compressibility, density, and pressure. Our data c...

Superfluid-insulator transitions of the fermi gas with near-unitary interactions in a periodic potential.

We consider spin-1/2 fermions of mass m with interactions near the unitary limit. In an applied periodic potential of amplitude V and period a_{L}, and with a density of an even integer number of fermions per unit cell, there is a second-order quantum phase transition between superfluid and insulating ground states at a critical V=V_{c}. We compute the universal ratio V_{c}ma_{L};{2}/variant Pl...

Collective modes in a unitary Fermi gas across the superfluid phase transition.

We provide a joint theoretical and experimental investigation of the temperature dependence of the collective oscillations of first sound nature exhibited by a highly elongated harmonically trapped Fermi gas at unitarity, including the region below the critical temperature for superfluidity. Differently from the lowest axial breathing mode, the hydrodynamic frequencies of the higher-nodal excit...
